Regions/Carinthia’s protected areas

Carinthia – Experience nature in Austria’s sunny south.
Carinthia could almost have been made especially: lakes pure enough to drink, majestic summits, lovely valleys, intact nature and healthy food as the basis of exceptional culinary experiences. The numerous nature protection areas and the two national parks shelter mysterious treasures of flora and fauna in their unspoiled landscapes, and you can “experience nature” with all your senses.

Dobratsch Nature Park – Villach Region
Feel good naturally
The mountains in the Dobratsch Nature Park near the second largest town in Carinthia, Villach, tower up into the sky as if they came from another world. They are characterised by their own very particular plant and animal species, and also by different climate zones. Birds of prey and chamois can be watched from right up close in stunning natural spectacles.

Sablatnig Moor – Lake Klopeiner See – Southern Carinthia
The blue moor frog is the mascot of this internationally important nature protection area in the lovely landscape of Southern Carinthia.
GeoPark Karnische Alpen
Varied mountain formations, idyllic spots in totally peaceful locations, lush alpine pastures and the most southerly glacier in Austria are the characteristic features of Carinthia’s natural arena. In no other region of the Alps are there so many fossils dating from the ancient days of the Earth.
Weissensee Nature Park
Protected from the outer world by dense, dark forests and formidable summits, the Upper Carinthian protected area of the Weissensee Nature Park awaits lovers of untouched ancient landscapes. A world beyond the Alps, around the fjord-like water, which you would have thought was completely lost by now.
Nockberge Mountains – Bad Kleinkirchheim
Wellness and hiking on the gentle Nockberge Mountains.
That special mix of exercise in the mountains and agreeable relaxation in the valley.

Hohe Tauern National Park
The Hohe Tauern National Park, by far the largest nature protection area in the entire Alpine region, covers an area of more than 1,800 square kilometres in Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol. Here the 300 highest peaks in Austria tower upwards, and above them all stands the Grossglockner (3,798 m).
European protected area Upper Drau Valley
Where once the ancient continent and the sea met, there now lies one of the last entirely unspoiled river landscapes in the southern Alps.
Along its 740 km journey, the water travels through four countries.
Nockberge Mountains – Lake Millstätter See

Ruby-red treasure mountains.
Quite inconspicuously the gentle Nockberge Mountains conceal unexpected secrets: ruby-red gemstones, dreamy places, breathtaking views, inspiring stories and sumptuous pleasures are just waiting to be discovered.
